Collinson Fraud Manager receives commendation for contribution in fight against travel insurance fraud

17 December 2015
Collinson is proud to announce that its Fraud Manager, Mathew Crawford-Thomas will today be awarded a commendation by City of London Police for his significant contribution to its insurance fraud prevention work.

Presented by Commissioner, Adrian Leppard, the commendation is in recognition of Mathew's active role in working with the City of London Police specialist insurance fraud prevention unit (IFED) to identify and investigate known and suspected incidents of insurance fraud.

In particular Mathew's efforts have been key in assisting IFED in the identification, investigation and successful prosecution of two serial claimants who made bogus insurance claims across multiple travel policies over a sustained period. This included the case of a Council Benefits Officer who lied to insurers 28 times to get pay-outs totalling some £88,000.

Barry Murray, Detective Sergeant, IFED who was a key lead on the division's Operation Teneroon targeting insurance fraud said: "Mathew was the driving force behind a day of action carried out by IFED that centred on fraudulent travel insurance claims. Mathew acted above and beyond what was expected of him ensuring the Operation was a success and produced eight evidential packages of the highest quality. During the Operation eight suspects were prosecuted or cautioned as a result of the evidence he provided, the majority of who have since been convicted at Crown Court for offences of fraud. Mathew is an excellent example of the insurance industry and Police working well together and achieving great results."

Robert Spindloe, Technical Director, Collinson said: "Mathew's collaborative approach and tireless investigation work have been instrumental in increasing the ratio of claims logged as potentially fraudulent by 50% over the last two years.

"Mathew has helped bring to court some exceptionally difficult cases where fraudsters' activities had previously gone undetected or unreported by other parties and his efforts have also been key in helping recoup claims costs for our insurer clients."

Further details of the above cases and how Mathew worked with IFED to uncover the perpetrators' crimes and bring them to justice can be seen in the new series of Claimed & Shamed and BBC 1 to be screened in the New Year.
