On July 10th, 20 Collinson colleagues will set out to tackle Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the UK. The goal, alongside reaching the summit, is to raise money for Save the Children.
The challenge
Braving changeable weather, rocky footpaths and perhaps the dreaded Scottish midge, Team Collinson will be ascending via the well-known Pony Track. It’s a challenging climb, but our walkers will be rewarded with stunning views and a great feeling of accomplishment.
The hike covers approximately 15km, reaches 1,345 metres above sea level and will take six to eight hours to complete. Although Ben Nevis is popular with tourists, with around 100,000 people visiting every year, attempting the route demands proper training and care. The walkers will need to stay on top of their hydration and fuel levels, as well as keeping a close eye on the weather. Luckily, they’ll also be joined by an experienced mountain guide.
Motivated to take on the mountain and help children worldwide, the team has been looking forward to the experience for months. As restrictions eased in England, a few members of the team were able to train together at Box Hill in Surrey, pushing themselves on what was the hottest day of the year so far.
Our partnership with Save the Children
We’ve been working with Save the Children since February 2020. As the world continues to struggle through the COVID-19 pandemic, Save the Children’s work has never been so important in helping young people around the world reach their potential.
Conflict, pandemics and natural disasters threaten millions of children's survival and well-being every year and the humanitarian needs are greater today than ever before. Save the Children’s Emergency Fund allows them to respond wherever the need is greatest. It means they can be on the ground within hours of a disaster striking, so they can reach children immediately with the essentials they need to survive. As COVID-19 took hold, Save the Children used the fund to support children in the UK and around the world to access vital healthcare, clean water and sanitation, and provide opportunities to continue their education.
Climbing Ben Nevis is just one of the events we’re taking part in to raise money for the charity. In October, one colleague will be running the London Marathon on behalf of Collinson. And last winter, our Head of Insurance, Lawrence Watts, ran a total of 1000km in a personal fundraising challenge.
