Support for the Emergency Fund has never been more crucial in responding to emergencies on the ground around the world to help children stay safe, healthy and to continue learning.
It could not be more vital with the global outbreak of COVID-19. The global pandemic is threatening children’s rights around the world, exposing them to potential risks and disrupting their lives. With support from the Emergency Fund, Save the Children were able to kickstart their COVID-19 response. They have now launched the biggest appeal in their 100-year history – aiming to raise $100 million to protect children in the world’s most deprived areas affected by COVID-19.

The Emergency Fund allows Save the Children to work faster and respond to real need, to deliver life-saving food, shelter, medicine and education straight to children and families who require it most, no matter where – and even in those emergencies that do not make the headlines.
It also allows Save the Children to work to avert crises before they become life-threatening by preparing communities with pre-positioned resources to respond within a few hours of an emergency occurring and limit the impact they can have.
Together with Save the Children, we are helping give children the chance not just to survive, but to thrive. Every child should be able to make their mark on the world and build a better future for themselves.
In 2019, Save the Children’s humanitarian work reached 35 countries and nearly 14 million people. The Emergency Fund responded to crisis in, Syria, Yemen, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and the Horn of Africa. Covering emergencies as a result of conflict, health epidemic, drought, flooding, cyclones and earthquakes.

Save the Children's response to the COVID-19 Pandemic
Save the Children is the world’s largest independent organisation for children, and they have over 100 years’ experience in responding to extreme humanitarian crises, from the war in Yemen to the most recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Save the Children are already running programmes, influencing governments and working with communities to keep children safe in the world’s poorest countries. But cases of COVID-19 in the places Save the Children work have already started to surge and they urgently need more funds to continue and scale up our life-saving activities, including:
Helping families to access water, sanitation and hygiene:
- Distributing soap, hand sanitisers and other critical hygiene supplies to our health workers and ensuring communities have access to safe water supplies
- Running intensive handwashing and personal hygiene campaigns – in places like Sudan and the DRC, they’re already finding innovative ways of delivering awareness raising messages to children, including through loudspeakers, TV, posters and videos
- Setting up and protecting handwashing stations – for example, in Somalia, they’re adapting shared handwashing facilities with foot pedals to release soap and water.
Saving lives:
- Equipping our healthcare workers on the frontline – from the displacement camps in Syria to conflict-affected places in Africa – with the information, training and supplies they need to diagnose and treat COVID-19
- Keeping children safe from other diseases by protecting our existing healthcare and nutrition services, and making sure communities are prepared for outbreaks
- They have set up a new 60-bed isolation and treatment centre to care for COVID-19 patients living in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh – now, Save the Children need to keep this and eight other health posts open and functioning for families affected by the virus.
Keeping children safe:
- Making sure children stay connected to support networks, key workers, and mental health and protection services during this pandemic – including children who are already traumatised by events like conflict
- Giving parents the tools they need to keep their children safe at home, including supporting online safety as more children access digital learning
- Supporting families’ livelihoods through initiatives like multipurpose cash grants, so that kids stay in school and out of work, and parents can provide nutritious food for their children.
Ensuring children keep learning:
- Where possible, continuing education programmes online
- Where there is no internet, providing alternative ways to learn – they’ve distributed solar radios to 8,000 Somali children to help them access distance learning
- Providing school materials and teaching tips for parents so that children can learn no matter where they are.
